Twenty-third Week in Ordinary Time

Dear my friends,
Here is the Gospel for us today according to Luke 6:43-49

Jesus Christ says, “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the  abundance of the heart his mouth speaks, “Why do you call me `Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Every one who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid the foundation upon rock; and when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; against which the stream broke, and  immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

WHAT Jesus Christ says in the Gospel today is very simple and clear for us. He gives us a tool to know our lives and others. He says that we know a tree by its fruit.

No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; for each tree is known by its own fruit. Likewise a person will produce good or bad fruit depending on what is sown in the heart. So he says, “The good man out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure produces evil; for out of the  abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

Our character, like fruit, doesn’t grow overnight. It takes a lifetime. Healthy mind and heart produce. good fruit. Good fruit is the result of healthy living according to moral truth and upright character.

Surely, Jesus Christ warns us that we are true to God when we know that our strength lies not in ourselves but in God himself who supplies the grace we need to live as his disciples. The fruit of a disciple is marked by faith, hope and love, justice, prudence, and fortitude.

In the Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist while worshipping Jesus Christ we cultivate good fruit in our lives and reject whatever produces bad fruit. There we also build our lives on the right foundation to reinforce his lesson about health and good living so that we can survive the storms that are sure to come. We will also stand up against adverse conditions.

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, you are the sure foundation and source of life and strength for us. Give us wisdom and strength to live according to your truth and to reject every false way. May we be good tree produce good fruit in our daily lives not only in our speeches but also in our deeds now and forever. Amen.
