The Second Week in Ordinary Time
The First Day of The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

Dear my friends,
Here is the Gospel for us today according to St. Mark 2:18-22

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; if he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wine skins; if he does, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but new wine is for fresh skins.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

FIRST of all I want to tell you that today is the first day of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Let’s pray for Christian unity as Jesus has prayed for us all.

The Gospel today tells us about the core of our relationship with Jesus Christ. In this relationship we are called to be his friends. To have relationship with Jesus Christ is to experience a whole new joy of relationship akin to the joy of the wedding party in celebrating with the groom and bride their wedding bliss.

For his friends in this relationship, there is both a time for rejoicing in his presence and celebrating his goodness and a time for seeking him with humility. We are invited to take joy in Jesus’ presence with us but we are also called to express sorrow and contrition for our sins.

In the Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist while worshipping Jesus Christ, we take joy in his presence with us. We also express our sorrow and contrition for our sins

Let’s pray: Lord Jesus Christ, may we grow in your great love and truth. Help us to seek you earnestly as our happiness. May we experience your presence in our prayer and fasting. Help us to turn away from sins now and forever. Amen.
